Dokter Emmy Pramesti D.S. SpTHT seperti dilansir Jawa Pos mengungkapkan bahwa congekan sebenarnya berawal dari infeksi saluran pernapasan akut. Biasanya pada batuk dan pilek. Nah, karena penyakit tersebut tak kunjung diobati atau tak sembuh-sembuh, virusnya mulai menginfeksi telinga bagian tengah.

Biasanya, saat virus sudah menginfeksi telinga tengah ini, anak mengalami panas dan nyeri di telinga. ”Biasanya juga disertai rewel,” ujar spesialis telinga, hidung, dan tenggorokan (THT) Rumah Sakit Husada Utama (RSHU) tersebut.
Jika pada kondisi ini anak tetap tak kunjung diobati, penyakit akan menjalar ke lubang pada gendang telinga. Dari sinilah akhirnya keluar cairan. Awalnya cairan yang keluar bening. Orang tua biasanya tidak terlalu waspada. Jika kondisi itu terjadi berkali-kali dan tak tertangani dengan baik, statusnya bisa meningkat menjadi kronis. Yaitu, keluar nanah berbau menyengat yang biasa disebut sebagai congekan atau kopokan.
Congekan bisa terjadi pada orang dewasa. Namun, pada umumnya ia lebih sering terjadi pada anak-anak. Sebab, pada usia anak-anak, daya tahan tubuh masih rendah. Karena itu, mereka mudah sekali terkena infeksi.
Meski begitu, masih banyak orang tua yang menganggap remeh congekan ini. Nanah yang keluar dari telinga biasanya hanya ditutup dengan kapas. Harapannya, nanah yang keluar bisa berhenti sendiri nanti. Padahal, jika dibiarkan berlarut-larut, bisa terjadi komplikasi.
”Jika sudah terjadi komplikasi, malah bisa infeksi ke mana-mana,” terang Emmy. Misalnya bisa jadi meningitis atau radang selaput otak. Selain itu, bisa terjadi abses atau nanah pada otak. Sebab, saluran telinga dekat dengan otak.
Namun, ini tidak berarti penyakit tersebut tak bisa disembuhkan. Jika dideteksi sejak awal, yaitu saat baru keluar cairan bening dari telinga, peluang kesembuhannya cukup besar. Bisa dibilang, dalam satu–dua minggu gendang telinga bisa menutup lagi tanpa operasi.
Tapi, berbeda halnya jika kondisinya sudah kronis. Sudah ada bagian tulang-tulang rawan di dalam telinga yang rusak. Karena itu, untuk menyembuhkan, dibutuhkan operasi. ”Operasi ini tidak bisa menutup gendang telinga, hanya membersihkan sel-sel tulang yang terinfeksi,” ujarnya. Jika gendang telinga yang berlubang tidak terlalu besar, memang penderita bakal mengalami penurunan pendengaran. Tapi tidak terlalu parah. Bisa diakali dengan alat bantu dengar setelah sembuh dari operasi. Masalah timbul jika congekan itu terjadi pada anak usia dua hingga tiga tahun yang masih belajar bicara. Jika dibiarkan sampai parah, ada kemungkinan si anak kesulitan untuk berbicara dan memiliki masalah pendengaran. (bee2)
